System Requirements
-------------------
286 or faster CPU (386 or faster preferred)
DOS 4.0 or higher, or Windows 95
VGA Display
4 MB random access memory (RAM)
20 or more DOS files open (config.sys line of FILES=20)
Installation and Starting the Game
----------------------------------
The game consists of the following files:
dpmi16bi.ovl
rtm.exe
redsud.exe
red_sud.fil
redunits.fil
sud_map.pcx
All of the above files must be stored in the same directory on your
hard drive.
To start the game log the computer to the directory containing the
game files, type redsud then press the <Enter> key.
DPMI - DOS Protected Mode Interface
-----------------------------------
The game uses extended memory through Borland's DPMI16BI, Ver. 7.1.
The Borland DPMI driver file is provided on the game disk. The
DPMI version used by the game may not be compatible with DPMI
drivers included in memory manager software packages such as
Quarterdeck's QEMM system.
*** If you are unable to run the game and are using a DPMI ***
driver other than the one provided on the game disk,
then you should disable the DPMI driver that you are
using.
For example, if during system boot you load the DPMI driver
provided by Quarterdeck, then before playing the game disable the
Quarterdeck DPMI driver by entering the command QDPMI OFF from the
DOS prompt. If you are loading a DPMI driver other than
Quarterdeck's and are unable to run the game then consult your
memory management documentation for instructions on how to disable
their DPMI driver.
File Management
----------------
There is no "delete file" feature for deleting old, saved game turn
files. You should delete unwanted saved game turn files using the
DOS delete command, DEL. Saved game turn files have the extension
of "sav".
Mouse Operation
---------------
You may use a mouse to move units and perform other game
operations. In order to use the mouse it must be active prior to
loading the game. Also, the mouse and its driver must be Microsoft
compatible. If an active mouse is detected the keyboard movement
feature will be disabled. In other words you may use either the
mouse or the keyboard to move units but not both. Please note that
the mouse may not function during game play if you are using an
older mouse driver. If that is the case then you must get a newer
mouse driver or you will be limited to playing the game using
keyboard controls only.
Game Crashes
------------
Should the game ever "crash" reboot the computer (Ctrl-Alt-Del or
reset button) before resuming use. This will clear data that may
be stranded in memory.
Windows 95 Instructions
-----------------------
Installation:
Click on the Windows 95 Start button; select Programs -
MS-DOS Prompt.
Double-click on the Properties button; click on the Memory
file card.
Make sure that MS-DOS Protected-Mode (DPMI) Memory is set to
auto.
Make sure that Extended (XMS) Memeory is set to auto.
Close the Properties windows.
While logged to the DOS C:\ prompt, follow the DOS
instructions for installing the game.
Running the Game from the MS-DOS Prompt Window:
Click on the Windows 95 Start button; select Programs -
MS-DOS Prompt.
Click on the Full-Screen button.
If you wish to play the game using the mouse, then at this
point load your mouse driver. You typically load a mouse
driver by typing the name of a file such as "mmouse" or
"gmouse" then pressing the <Enter> key. Check your mouse
documentation to get the exact name of the mouse driver file
you are using. Note: Even though you are using the mouse
while in Windows 95, you must reload the mouse driver in DOS
in order for the mouse to "communicate" with the game program.
Follow the DOS instructions for playing the game.
Returning to Windows 95:
After exiting the game, simultaneously press the <Alt>-<Enter>
keys to return to Windows 95.
